Year of Wonders | February Book Club

So last month, I shared how I set up a book club, the books we’ve read thus far….  and the fact I had slacked in the actual READING of the books the last few months.  I also shared my commitment to reading EVERY book going forward, including last month’s book, The Prayer Box….

the prayer boxI DID in fact finish this book AFTER our Book Club met last month.  So here’s my quick review:  this book had somewhat of a slow and difficult start for me.  It didn’t draw me in immediately.  The main character irritated all of us and the book was very wordy.  HOWEVER, push through that because 1/3 – 1/2 of the way in, the storyline comes together and it’s a WONDERFUL book.  This is a worthwhile read!!!  It led to a wonderful discussion (focused on the evolution of the main character).

Okay, so on to February’s Book Club

book club beverageWe kept with our Drinks and Desserts theme…  and decided Champagne was a unanimous favorite!  I meant to serve this last month to enhance all the celebrating I was already doing and somehow forgot.  SO, we celebrated some more!

my sugar pie boxI also chose to forego baking myself and try another local bakery this month….  This time My Sugar Pie, a local bakery that’s received national recognition.  Though it was hard to choose, I went with a new-to-me flavor…

sugar pieApparently, Indiana has a state pie.  Who knew?  So we enjoyed Indiana’s “Hoosier Sugar Cream Pie“.  New LOVE!

And yes, there was a book involved.

year of wondersFor February we read Year of Wonders by Geraldine Brooks.  This book is WONDERFUL.  It is set in the 1600′s and tells the story of the Plague.  There are so many layers to this book.  So much imagery.  Then there comes a point where you simply cannot put the book down until you finish it.  One of the friends in our Book Club was up till 1:30 in the morning as a result.  But when you finish?  You are SHOCKED!  No one saw the ending coming.  I told the girls I almost called an emergency meeting so we could discuss this one right away, the minute I had finished.  I won’t give anything away other than to say none of us were pleased with the ending (READ the EPILOGUE).  It hit us all outta left field.  But boy it made for one of our best discussions yet!  If you’ve read this book, I’d LOVE to hear your thoughts.

If you enjoy reading OR, like I did, need a nudge to get reading….  Follow the new Pinterest Board I’ve created along with my friends, Aggie of Aggie’s Kitchen and Sheila of Eat 2 Gather.  I’ve also recently joined Good Reads and would love to connect there!

For March, our Book Club is going to read The End of Your Life Book Club by Will Schwalbe.  If you aren’t in a Book Club (or are looking for a book for your club to read) and want to join in virtually, grab this book and start reading!  Be sure to let us know in the comments that you’ll be reading this one too.
