Year of Wonders | February Book Club

year of wonders

So last month, I shared how I set up a book club, the books we've read thus far....  and the fact I had slacked in the actual READING of the books the last few months.  I also shared my commitment to reading EVERY book going forward, including last month's book, The Prayer Box.... I DID in fact finish this book AFTER our Book Club met last month.  So here's my quick review:  this book had somewhat of a slow and difficult start for me.  It didn't draw me in immediately.  The main character … [Read more...]

Chocolate Peanut Butter Cup Cheesecake

So I had mentioned that February would find me doing a detox after my month-long birthday celebrating.  And I'm sure that WILL happen.  But not today.  Today it's Monday.  And Mondays are hard enough.  But they are even more difficult when they are cold and dark and dreary.  So today, we won't talk detox....  we will talk CHEESECAKE! I've been wanting to try my hand at cheesecake for a sweet forever....  and never had.....  until..... Go Big or Go Home.  This one goes BIG.  And this is … [Read more...]

How to Set Up a Book Club

Last April I started a book club....  even though I am NOT by nature a reader.  I am however someone who loves to cook...  and eat.... and most importantly, spend time with my girlfriends.  So an excuse to get us together each month?  YES! In April, we read Redeeming Love = BEST BOOK EVAH!  Seriously, could not put this down. May was too hectic to get everyone together. Anyone with school-aged kids can attest... May is CRAZY month! We couldn't get together in June since a lot of us were … [Read more...]

***UPDATE:  Thanks to Pinterest, this post is bringing a whole lotta new visitors here everyday!  If you're new, I'd love to connect...  Find me on FaceBook, Twitter, and Pinterest.  And we'd LOVE to have you join our Weigh-In Wednesday FaceBook Group where we focus on accountability and encouragement...  and FUN. About two years ago, I was super focused and devoted to eating well.  I was also running 25 miles a week.  The combination of those two things had me at a peak level of fitness. … [Read more...]

Banana “Ice Cream”

With the New Year came a renewed commitment to healthy eating.  Clean Eating.  Whole Real Foods.  I started on New Year's Eve.  I know, right?  I launched into The Daniel Plan 10 Day Detox.  Essentially, no dairy, sugar, wheat/gluten, alcohol, caffeine, processed or fast foods, etc. Having been in such a cycle or poor eating in November and December it wasn't so hard.  My energy was low.  And I could feel my body calling out for a fresh start. The detox went great and I didn't really miss … [Read more...]

So I've already talked about My Girls and about Our Book Club.  I've also already admitted to being a horrible reader before Book Club started.  That has all changed my Friends.  I now have stacks and stacks of books and can't get enough of them.  Woo-to-the-hoo! Okay, so since I wasn't blogging during the first few months of our Book Club, let me catch you up: We started out reading Redeeming Love by Francine Rivers.  This literally was a book I could. not. put. down.  Oh it is SUCH A … [Read more...]

A few months back, I started a Book Club.  I am a HORRIBLE reader...  as in NEVER read.  So I thought this would be a great way to get GirlFriends together AND get myself to read.  It's worked!  I'm now READING!!!! For our August meeting we were to read, Bread & Wine by Shauna Niequist.  It was a great summer read full of heart-warming stories.  I can't wait to read more of Shauna's books. For the meeting, I thought it would be fun to make a few of the recipes from the book.  I … [Read more...]

Hearing God Speak through a Rainbow Cake

I had been seeing Rainbow Cakes all over the internet and got the wild hair to try one in my kitchen.  I decided it would make a great last-day-of-summer project.  So my kiddos and I rounded up all the ingredients and got to work.... While the 6 layers of the cake cooled, we took a break and went to the park.  While we were there we saw a beautiful RAINBOW created from the sun shining on the water feature in the kids' play area.  All summer we never saw one....  and that day.... the day we were … [Read more...]
